Traditional Hand Woven Indigo Ikat Cushion | Ombak

Regular price £89.00

I discovered this stunning handwoven fabric whilst on a trip to the Island of Sumba, a place so alive with wildness, it would not seem out of place if a giant Pterodactyl came swooping over the hills.

Symbolism is an important part of Sumbanese culture and the textile this cushion is made from depicts the feminine in a soft pale grey on a faded indigo background. Ikat weaving is an important part of Indonesian textiles telling the stories and history of ancestors, a tradition that can be richly observed in Sumba. Sumbanese textiles are used to bind contracts, as a form of payment, as a gesture of gratitude and peace as well as playing more important roles such as helping ancestors recognise the person due to the textiles they have been buried with.
